Cotterill Farm Cottages

Self-Catering Holiday Cottages in the Peak District National Park, England, UK

Our Cottages

Our cottages have consistently achieved the grading of 4 Stars from the English Tourism Council (and under the old grading system 'Highly Commended'), but despite this we have constantly striven to improve our facilities.

Thus we have recently upgraded both the bathroom and the kitchen in each cottage, with the installation of gloss work-tops, halogen cookers (excellent for near instantaneous heat), dishwahers and real stone granite sinks, adding to the existing solid oak kitchen units. and many more improvements have recently been made to each of the individual cottages Services offered are also being constantly improved, such as the availability of wireless internet access.

The Dairy - a Cottage for Two People

dairy exterior
The Dairy exterior

This really spacious cottage has a large sized bathroom with Italian floor tiles, containing five piece suite (separate shower cubicle and bidet), and a similarly well equipped kitchen. Above these two rooms is a good sized galleried bedroom, which overlooks a large open plan lounge (twenty feet by twenty feet), rising to the rafters.

This lounge has polished stone flags on the floor; a log burner stands on a stone plinth and is a focal feature in the middle of the room. Some of the stone walls are exposed, as are the extensive wood beams. The cottage benefits from central heating

The tastefully co-ordinated furniture and furnishings are of an extremely high standard. As you would expect of a cottage of this quality, there is a large tv, video dvd and full sky programmes (including the film and sports package). There is a second tv in the bedroom. We would urge you to have a look at our virtual tour - see just below

This has often been described by our guests as being a 'second honeymoon cottage'. There is a private patio area in front of the cottage with superb views, similar in fact to that on the aerial view on our home page.

Four Person Cottages

Featured Stone Steps of Dale View

Dale View

So named because of the views of the surrounding dales. This cottage has an upstairs lounge (featuring a substantial old exposed beam seen on picture below - the rest of the items in this picture have changed and been heavily upgraded, but the beam remains the same!) and kitchen area to take advantage of the views. Downstairs are two double bedrooms, making this cottage particularly suited for two couples.

The shower room is also on the ground floor. There are two means of entry and exit, on the ground floor or up attractive external stone steps to the living area (with of course an internal flight of stairs as well). A second TV in one of the bedrooms supplements the flat screeen tv on the first floor. Some guests occasionally choose to sit out in the early evening sun on the paved area at the top of the outside stone steps using it similar to a private patio area. The supplementary log effect heater adds to the superb atmosphere of this cottage.

The Lounging Area of Liffs Cottage

Liffs Cottage

So named because of the view of Liffs Hill two miles away.

This cottage, like its adjoining neighbour, Dale View, fronts on to a grassed area and beyond are fields, dales and rolling hills, (accessible via a squeeze stile near the adjacent off road-parking area).

This cottage also has a partly exposed old beam has the more conventional layout of lounge/kitchen on the ground floor and the two bedrooms and a fully equipped bathroom and shower on the first floor. Again, there is a second TV in the twin bedroom.

The Milking Parlour - a 3-person cottage

milking parlour
The Milking Parlour is the ground floor of this former barn.

This is the ground floor of a barn converted in 2006, - upstairs is another letting unit but guests should have no need to worry about noise transmission, as we have comfortably exceeded what are in any event the latest very strict building control noise transmission requirements with the installation of an independantly hanging ceiling and a false floor.

The Milking Parlour has two bedrooms, one double and one single, a decent sized shower room/wet room, (not with a shower cubicle but you walk into the shower area, which is seperated from the rest of the room by glass blocks, giving far more room for manoevering). This is en-suite to both bedrooms - in other words there are two doors into the shower room.

The living area is extremely comfortable and and has as a focal point a sympathetic log effect stove (not the old fashioned type that were less sympathetic).

Being our latest conversion the Milking Parlour has just that much higher specificiations, such as stone worktops, and central heating, in addition to the specification of the other cottages The internal picture above does not do the Milking Parlour justice, having been taken with a wide angle lens, it reduces the size of the room. This converted barn is located just 15 yards from the other cottages and in a way this barn forms the final part of the courtyard. Adjacent to the Milking Parlour is very large grassed area shared with the other cottages.

General Facilities

The 300 yard tarmacced drive leads up to the cottages, with two seperate parking areas close to the respective cottages. In front of the cottages is a substantial garden area (laid mainly to lawn) for the exclusive use of our guests, with several high quality outside seating areas (Incidentally, picnic sets are supplied in all cottages). There is a shared barbecue. Guests have access to a freezer where good quality, locally produced ready meals can be purchased, at modest cost - main dish currently about £7 for two persons. Guests are able to access our wireless broadband facility.

Part way down the tarmacced drive is one of our two wild flower meadows. There is also a well-equipped laundry room on site - no charges. Also a garage where bikes can be safely stored.

We like to think that our guests benefit from our farm house being on the other side of the courtyard from the cottages, yet the cottages themselves face away from the court-yard to give some degree of privacy, with The Dairy facing in one direction Dale and Liffs in a different direction and the Milking Parlour in a third direction.

Information and Advice

In each cottage we provide 7(!)well organised personalised information packs, which have been highly praised by both our guests and the Tourist Board, whose inspectors have all commented that they are the best they have seen, and are clearly much appreciated by our guests - indeed we venture to suggest that the information provided will not be bettered anywhere else in England. (Mind you, with the extent of the attractions within say a half an hours drive, there is so much material to work on).

In addition to containing the more usual but extensive brochures produced by the various organisers of the tourist attractions, we set out extensive ideas on what to do in the immediate area, also making suggestions on the numerous eating and drinking establishments close-by. Furthermore, being on-site we are often able to assist in enquiries, but only when asked!

Armed with this information, many of our guests say that they had not begun to realise how much the Peak District had to offer, and that even a two weeks visit is only just enough to scratch the surface.

Others say they have been able to give their car a holiday, with the attractions immediately on offer, often aided by the excellent bus service stopping just yards away from the end of our drive, the route has on several occasions been described in national newspapers as the most scenic bus route in England.
