Self-Catering Holiday Cottages in the Peak District National Park, England, UK

Location

Cotterill Farm is situated 300 yards out of  Biggin-by-Hartington, on the road to the picturesque village of Hartington.  It is worth clicking on this link to Hartington to obtain considerably more information about both Hartington and Biggin.

Hartington is about a mile and a half away by road but only just over a mile away by the excellent well surfaced and extremely scenic bridleway starting yards from the end of our drive. We often walk over these bridleways to visit Hartington, there is no need to put on hiking boots, and often the return trip takes place in the dark.

The River Dove and Dovedale are within easy walking distance.

We are exactly half way between the  Spa town of Buxton and the market town of Ashbourne (much visited for its numerous antique shops), about a mile off the main (scenic) trunk road linking these two market towns.

We are located centrally in the White Peak area  of the Peak District National Park, - an area of rolling hills, dales (valleys), cultivated fields and dry stone walls for which the Peak District is so famous. (The Dark Peak is mainly moorland). This central position is confirmed by the fact that the market towns of Buxton, Bakewell, Matlock, Ashbourne, and Leek, all towns on the edge of the White Peak, are all between 10 and 11 miles away but at different points of the compass.

Many of the major conurbations of England are within easy reach - Derby, Nottingham, Stoke on Trent and Sheffield are all less than 1 hours drive away, and Manchester and Birmingham can be accessed in about 90 minutes. Quite a few of our guests catch the train from Buxton to Manchester, taking one hour, the first half of this journey has wonderful views.

There are innumerable eating places in the area, a total of 28 pubs within 7 miles (!), a couple of restaurants, several chip shops and quite a number of tea-shops. (Our nearest pub is 350 yards away from the end of our drive, whilst the two excellent coaching inns in Hartington are 25 minutes walk away along the scenic bridleways.)

The really impressive Hartington Youth Hostel is at the end of this bridleway, 20 minutes walk away,  is open to non-residents and offers really good value meals in relaxing surroundings. It also has the best beer garden in the country!

We have a dedicated  'food and drink' information folder in each cottage, setting out the advantages and disadvantages of all of these and many more establishments offering food and drink, whether for eating in or purchasing to take away.
